Silchar: Allying fears of Bengali Hindus living in Assam, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav on Monday said Hindus, Christians and Buddhists, who came to India from Bangladesh or erstwhile East Pakistan, will be granted Indian citizenship.

“No person who came from Bangladesh out of persecution or harassment will have to leave Assam or India. The NDA government at the Centre will soon bring necessary amendment to the present citizenship Act to grant citizenship to those persons,” said Madhav.

Addressing the media at the Circuit House here, the BJP general secretary said the ongoing process of NRC update is a separate issue. “It’s being carried out by the state government under the guidance of the Supreme Court. The granting of citizenship has nothing to do with the updating of NRC. The Centre will take necessary steps to grant citizenship to the victims of Partition,” he added.

Madhav, who earlier took part in a meeting of officials of different frontal organizations of the RSS and the BJP in the Barak Valley, said BJP’s organizational affairs were discussed at the meeting. At the same time, the strategy for the coming assembly election was also discussed, he added. Madhav is responsible for BJP’s electoral exercise in 2016.

“Bengali Hindus are always with BJP and this time BJP will get maximum seats from the Barak Valley. People of Assam are ready to get rid of 10 years of misrule of the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in Assam. They are ready to defeat Congress in the state. Now, BJP is out to garner support of the people of Assam to form the next government,” said the senior BJP leader.

In reply to a question, Madhav said there will be no alliance with AIUDF in Assam in the next election. “AIUDF will be our main opponent,” he added.

The BJP national general secretary hailed the peace agreement signed between NSCN (IM) and the Centre in Delhi on Monday. He said this step will bring long-lasting peace in this region and Nagaland in particular. It will also accelerate the state’s development process, he said.
