New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav on Thursday hit out at Congress leader P Chidambaram for questioning the tangible benefits India has gained from BRICS meetings, describing his remarks as a “naaraz phupha (disgruntled uncle)” attitude.
Speaking at India Today’s BRICS Roundtable 2026, Madhav said dismissing the relevance of global forums reflected a lack of understanding of the changing international order.
Chidambaram had questioned the benefits India had derived from recent BRICS summits, saying the last two to three meetings had not delivered any concrete gains for the country.
Madhav asked whether similar questions were raised when the UPA hosted BRICS summits. “Inhi ko PM (Modi) calls naaraaz phupha (These are the people whom PM calls disgruntled uncles). When the UPA hosted BRICS summits, did anybody say what the benefit of it was?” he said.
“To dismiss these forums as having no relevance is a complete lack of understanding of the contemporary global reality. It is surprising to have come from someone who served as foreign minister. This is naaraaz phupha attitude,” Madhav said.
